At the foot of the South Downs in East Sussex, with a population of around 90,000 people the popular Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne lies just 44 miles south of the M25 on the south coast. Known as the Empress of Watering Places, Eastbourne's place name developed from 'Burne' the stream running through the Old Town. With its sea views, most notably, Beachy Head, which boasts the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain and famed film locations, staying in an Eastbourne hotel gives any visitor much needed time and space to enjoy all the area has to offer.
Film and theatre both thrive in Eastbourne with scenes from both Notes On A Scandal and Made in Dagenham filmed in the area. There are also six theatres to choose from offering a variety of entertainment from West End musicals, comedy, live bands, to plays, ballet and Opera.
For those interested in the history of the area Eastbourne's oldest village is situated in the heart of the town and features a 12th century pub, St Mary's Church and Pilgrims House. Adding to this history Alciston, a village located to the edge of the South Downs displays many thatched roof houses and an ancient church and farm that define key developments of Eastbourne's history.
Eastbourne's history is defined by both its past and its present and offers a wide variety of tourist attractions for both young and old. At Battle Abbey and the battlefield visitors can begin their journey back in time to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 fought between Harold the Saxon king and William the Conqueror.
William the conqueror built the Abbey of St Martin which now forms one of the many buildings connected to this infamous time in history. Both Hastings Castle and Pevensey Castle provide further information about the Battle and William the Conqueror's time spent in England.
The town also offers a number of different parks and gardens including Hampden Park with its extensive area of semi-natural woodland and Gildredge Park and Manor Gardens with spaces for both informal sports and quieter relaxation.
Not forgetting the children, Eastbourne has its own miniature steam railway, adventure park and six screen cinema. The bandstand provides an exciting programme and around 140 - 150 concerts per year ranging from Tribute Bands, 1812 Firework Concerts to Sunday Night on the Proms. With seating for 1,600 and a build that dates back to 1935, it is not only a major attraction but a piece of Eastbourne's history.
Regular events include Airbourne, Eastbourne's air show, the world's biggest seafront air show, international tennis events and the The Beachy Head Marathon, one the biggest off-road marathons in the UK. Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon the route travels through the South Downs National Park countryside.
